And what changed my mind?
The Wish 🧞
I freaking love to write a blog for hours,
immerse in deep research,
pour out all my ideas,
create awesome content and
secretly root for all my readers to enjoy it.
But the reality is,
no one is going to read every word of it! 🥹
So, I comfortably subscribed to the idea – The shorter, the sweeter!
The Compromise 😶
With the aim of keeping my blogs short, I fixed the max. word count as 300.
I started to write on the topic ‘iPhone pricing’
By the time I completed my rough draft, the length was 1863 words.
But I was stern to keep the length as ‘300’
With no other options, I let go of a lot of ideas and valuable insights that strongly supported the core topic.Â
I know, for sure, everything I had to edit-out was not crap,Â
rather the connected details that support the primary subject of the blog.
The ‘Aha’ Moment 🤯
I now had a 298-word blog answering the primary question – How much does an iPhone cost?
It was right then, the moment of truth happened! 🧘
I started to proof-read my blog,
Now, I was no more a writer, but a reader, in fact, a consumer.
I started having so many questions on my mind:
what is the cost in India?
does this include a warranty cost?
where can I get the best offers?
The option I had now was, close this blog, run to another random blog and find the details I need.
Pause. Back to being a writer, this is the truth:
‘People land on your blog with different queries.Â
Each person comes to a blog with a unique intent, a unique question.’
There is absolutely no harm in keeping your blog short.
But the question is:
Does it provide information or Does it provide value?
I agree, if it’s long,Â
no one is going to read every word of it! 🥹
But,
People will skim
Take a value,
Maybe they’ll take another one,
And another one too!
The only thing you need to take care when writing lengthy blogs is, just be careful not to dump crap. I cannot bring up about Nokia 1100 out of the blue while explaining about iPhone cost.Â
I Gave Up 😶â€ðŸŒ«ï¸
So, I just have to let go of the idea, ‘The shorter, the sweeter’ and embrace only ‘Please don’t sound dumber’.Â
I agree short content may work in different placements, say, micro-blogs like X and LinkedIn, but when it comes to giving value, go with all your heart and mind.
Trust me, it works. Make your content a full-feast for thirsty minds!
In short,
When people come to you for value, give it generously!
Have a beautiful rest of the day!
